Thunderstorms and persisting rain into the night forecasted for Mbombela

Isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are expected in the Lowveld today, said the SAWS.

According to the SAWS, Mbombela can expect a late-afternoon thunderstorm.

SAWS issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms expected over the eastern parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, resulting in localised flooding in susceptible areas, roads and bridges, damaging winds and difficult driving conditions due to poor visibility.

“Late-afternoon thunderstorms, with possible strong winds, are expected to develop over the northern escarpment of Mpumalanga, which will move eastwards over the Lowveld region on Tuesday. A 30% chance of rain is expected that will persist into the night and the early hours of Wednesday morning,” said the service.

On Monday, a cut-off low system moved to the southern coast, developing the so-called scorpion’s tail (a deep low pressure at the surface that is steered by stronger winds high up in the atmosphere and contains convective clouds), which brought widespread and heavy rainfall over the southern parts of the Western Cape and the southern parts of the Eastern Cape. This system has already started to clear up, said SAWS.
