Komatipoort court grants alleged counterfeit goods smuggler bail

A man, who was allegedly found in possession of millions of rands worth of counterfeit goods, was granted bail by the Komatipoort Magistrate's Court.

A man who had been arrested after he was allegedly found transporting R4.5m worth of counterfeit goods was released on bail by the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on September 26.

Vusi Victor Nkosi (38) was granted R10 000 bail.

Mpumalanga Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks) spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, said Nkosi was arrested on September 6 on the N4 near the Lebombo Border.

The Mbombela-based Hawks, along with the South African National Defence Force, Komatipoort SAPS and SARS Customs and Excise officials had been at the port of entry, performing their daily duties when they stopped and searched the truck Nkosi was driving. She said the truck had two trailers and was travelling from Mozambique into South Africa.

Sekgotodi said that during the search, counterfeit sneakers, branded as Nike, New Balance, Diesel, Lacoste and Reebok, with and estimated street value of R4.5m, were found.

He was charged with the contravention of the provisions of Counterfeit Goods Act. The matter has been postponed to October 20 for affidavits from the brand holders and will be transferred to the Specialised Commercial Crime Court.
