Thieves target empty houses

Not even empty dwellings are safe from criminals these days. Gangs of thieves are increasingly targeting houses with estate-agent signs, stealing copper pipes, taps and other metal objects.

NELSPRUIT – According to Mr Jacques Meiring of Bossies Community Justice (BCJ), they have apprehended three suspects in the past week for this crime. Two men were arrested in Sonheuwel on Friday morning, after a member of the public alerted BCJ of suspicious activity in Bischoff Street.

After a chase through the suburbs by BCJ and Hi-Tech Nelspruit, one of the accused was caught, and a second was taken into custody by J&M Security at the Sonpark centre. The third man escaped.

The owner of the house in Bischoff Street estimated the damage between R60 000 and R100 000. “Now I can’t sell the home before I have had all of the pipes replaced and fixtures replaced,” he said in exasperation while inspecting the damage.

Meiring warns homeowners to make provision for extra security when selling a house to prevent this kind of damage to their property.
