HECTORSPRUIT – Strikers from the farms Golden Fronters, Whisky and Vergenoeg, are back at work and are satisfied with the outcome of their demonstrations. “The protests officially ended last Thursday,” said one of the employees, Mr Matthew Mbungle. According to him they are happy and ready to return to work. He said that their employers had given them an eight per cent increase and promised them a R10-million profit sharing on June 30, 2014.
Police officials were pleased with the cooperation between the workers and employers, “There were no violent demonstrations and people respected the property of others,” said police spokesman Const Bheki Nkosi.
According to Mr Justice Shagwane of the Food and Allied Workers Union, the matter between the two parties was resolved without conflict. He said, “The employer’s initial terms were a six per cent increase in wages and a delay in the R10 million share, but that was turned down.
“They reconsidered and increased the six to eight per cent and agreed to give the profit-sharing amount to the workers on June 30, 2014. This demonstration was peaceful and all the employees are now satisfied with the outcome.”
