MALALANE – The South African Police Service in Tonga received a donation of two trailers to add to its crime-fighting capability.
Edcon, Africa’s largest non-food retailer, donated these much-needed tools on September 26 at the Tonga sports field.
According to them, the trailers will benefit the community.
“The trailers are used as mobile police contact points where residents can report crimes and certify documents.
They have helped in improving visible policing and acting as a deterrent for criminal activity in areas where they are used,” said Ms Mercia Maserumule, group corporate-social investment (CSI) manager for transformation and corporate affairs.
This initiative is part of Edcon’s programme, and it has to date donated
39 trailers in all nine provinces.
Maserumule added, “The company believes that it is through active participation as a proudly South African company that a decrease in crime in our communities can be achieved”.
She added that the trailers did not only serve as police contact points, but were also used during sport and entertainment events. In addition the trailers would also be used to improve community safety awareness and encourage communities to be active participants in the fight against crime.
