Two suspected robbers chose a unsuspecting passerby in a slow-moving truck as an escape vehicle on Tuesday afternoon, but this nevertheless still led to a high-speed chase. According to Mr Jacques Meiring of Bossie’s Community Justice (BCJ), he was informed by a woman that she had been robbed in Nelpark Nature Reserve earlier that afternoon. She said she was approached by three men while walking alone in the reserve. They stole her cellphone and ran away. Another suspect approached her, pretending to console her, but attacked her as
soon as they reached her vehicle. The man allegedly tried to strangle her before he stole her handbag. The woman gave a clear description to BCJ and Hi-Tech Security Nelspruit, which was also on the scene. Soon after, at about 13:20, the security guards spotted four men who fit the description standing on the corner of the the N4 and R40.
Meiring said that when he approached them, two started running away, while the other two suspects jumped into a slow moving truck passing by. They apparently forced the driver to speed off and Mr Ruan Marais from Hi-Tech, who was still in his vehicle, gave chase. According to Meiring, the truck was forced off the road on the corner of Hardekool and Old Pretoria road after nearly causing two accidents. All three men in the truck were arrested, but the driver was let go after he explained that he was an innocent passerby. One of the arrested suspects was identified by the victim. Both were handed over tot the SAPS Flying Squad.
