Update: Drive to save chimps from euthanasia

The public outcry has shown that there could be a way to finance the establishment of a separate and secure camp for the primates, says the Jane Goodall Institute.

NELSPRUIT The Jane Goodall Institute South Africa (JGI SA) announced today that Chimp Eden will embark on a bid to save chimpanzees Amadeus and Nikki. (Read the original article here).

The press release reads, “After a lengthy process of consultation, the board of the JGISA as well as the Ethics Committee has found that at no time was any one person to blame for the attack on a staff member by a chimp at JGI SA’s Chimp Eden. The board has confirmed that the attack, which unfortunately resulted in serious injuries of our valued member of staff, was completely unprovoked.

The JGISA recognises the great public concern for the wellbeing of our chimps and we are appealing to the public to participate in a month-long fundraising campaign that will hopefully secure enough funds to build a high-security enclosure for the two chimps involved in the incident. JGI SA needs to raise at least US$ 250,000, approximately R2.6 million in order to build this special enclosure.

Due to the time-sensitive nature of this issue, we implore the public to share this request far and wide so that we can raise the funds in time. If the required funds are not raised timeously, they will instead be used to upgrade the enclosures already in use at the sanctuary.”
