MBOMBELA – The fraud-accused former provincial head of the Hawks is now tasked with inspecting other provincial offices.
The new spokesman for the directorate for priority crime investigation (DPCI) Brig Hangwani Malaudzi confirmed this week that Maj Gen Simon Mapyane has been moved.
“He was brought to Pretoria by Lt Gen (Anwar) Dramat to oversee the support services functions and currently his role has been shifted to do inspections by the acting head (Maj Gen Berning Ntlemeza).”
Mapyane was removed as the head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga in November and moved to the national head office following a sit-in staged by members of the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru). Their grievances included a lack of action taken against Mapyane since his arrest in 2013. He faces charges of fraud related to travel claims amounting to R18 753,63.
Former Hawks spokesman Capt Paul Ramaloko said Mapyane was not suspended but redeployed. Maj Gen Yolisa Seothula now heads the Mpumalanga office.
Mulaudzi this week reiterated that protocol dictated that all internal disciplinary matters were not discussed outside. “All court-related cases as you are aware have not been finalised and we do not want to be seen to be prejudicing that process.”
Mapyane is due back in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on March 18.
