Member of mayoral committee charged over KaNyamazane violence

Police confirm that an ANC councillor in Mbombela has been arrested.

MBOMBELA – Police today confirmed that Mr Bheki Zulu, a member of the mayoral committee, has appeared in court on a charge of malicious damage to property. This follows an incident in KaNyamazane when supporters of the ANC and South African Communist Party came to blows ahead of the latter’s annual Joe Slovo memorial lecture on January 25.

Sgt Gerald Sedibe, Mpumalanga police spokesman says Zulu was arrested and appeared in the KaNyamazane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, and was released on a warning. He is a member of Mbombela mayor, Cllr Sibusiso Mathonsi’s committee.

Sedibe says Zulu is the only person to have been arrested in connection with the disruption of the lecture thus far. He is set to reappear in court on February 19.
