MBOMBELA – A man in his 50s had to be rushed to hospital after he was involved in a horrific accident on the R40 towards Barberton yesterday.

Earlier Lowvelder reported that he tried to overtake a truck with his Toyota MR2 convertible sports car, and collided head-on with an oncoming Toyota Hilux double-cab. However, it recently came to light that he sped past a woman who wanted to turn towards home. He apparently lost control of his vehicle due to high speed, before hitting the oncoming Hilux.

According to Mr Cobus Els, a paramedic with Netcare 911 who was on the scene, he sustained serious internal injuries. He was taken to Rob Ferreira Hospital at around 18:00. However, the occupant of the Hilux refused to go to the hospital as he claimed to have sustained no injuries.   

Els says that the patient was very lucky to survive. He adds that his seatbelt and airbags most definitely saved his life. “It could have been a lot different,” he says.

Traffic flow was interrupted, but no major congestion was experienced.
