MBOMBELA – Electronic security systems are to be implemented at all hospitals in the province. But when and how, would depend on available budget.
The premier’s executive took a decision on Tuesday to tighten safety and security by adding electronic systems to security services at public hospitals. MEC for finance, Mr Sikhumbuzo Eric Kholwane and Ms Refilwe Mtsweni, MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, made the announcement on Wednesday, following a meeting of the executive council.
According to Mtsweni the decision was made after a patient died in an “unfortunate incident” at KwaMhlanga Hospital on Tuesday.
“It is still not clear at this stage how the patient died at the hospital; the police are still investigating the matter. Both health MEC, Mr Gillion Mashego and Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Mr Vusi Songwe are attending the matter,” the MECs told the press in a statement.
Kholwane said that modern living required more technologically advanced modes of security. “The solution for security matters are becoming more and more electronic. If budget permits, all hospitals will be getting electronic security systems.” The measures would eventually include other government buildings, according to Kholwane.
“The executive committee is taking this very seriously.”
But, all departments’ annual performance plans (APP) have been tabled and approved for the year. The Department of Health has a budget of about R10 billion.
“In terms of processes we can’t tamper with the APPs,” Kholwane said. He indicated that the government would investigate whether conditional grants from national government could be utilised for the purpose of installing electronic security.
“If these grants do not cover these expenses or allow it, we might have to consider allocating budget in the adjustment later this year.”
