Day 10 of Lily Mine disaster: Rescue halted pending safety audit

Decisions on how to continue will only be made once the audit is done.

LOW’S CREEK – The rescue mission at Lily Mine was halted yesterday after another collapse happened yesterday morning. This after controlled blasts had to be done earlier in the week to clear large rocks out of the area where miners are digging.

Mr Mike Begg, operations director of Lily Mine will today be joined on site by Mr Eben Swanepoel and mine geologists and orientating Professor, Mr Malan from Tukkies. Together they will attempt to assess the current situation. Should the movement in the pit be found to be stable by Monday, Begg and Malan will be going underground with experts to complete a stability and safety audit.

Decisions on how to continue will only be made once the audit is done.
