Mozambican man found with counterfeit money

The suspect was immediately taken into custody and charged with possession of counterfeit bank notes.

KOMATIPOORT – Last Friday Mr Fernando Chaingo, a Mozambican citizen in his early 30s was arrested at the Lebombo Border Post after a stop-and-search.

Chaingo, who was travelling from South Africa to Mozambique, was found to be carrying counterfeit South African currency worth R3 000.

According to Komatipoort Police spokesman, Const Natacia Mbuyane the money was discovered when the suspect’s vehicle was stopped and searched.

She said, “Officers questioned him why the money was hidden in the vehicle and further investigation revealed that the R100 notes that amounted to R3 000, were fake,”

The suspect was immediately taken into custody and charged with possession of counterfeit bank notes.

Chaingo appeared in the Malelane Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was released on bail of R1 000. He is expected back in court on March 1.
