Former party leader says own party is behind alleged racism incident

Mr Anthony Benadie speaks out against racism, after incident allegedly occurred at his restaurant.

MBOMBELA – The former provincial leader of the DA has spoken out against racism.

Anti-racism week kicked off on Monday. It is supported by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.

Mr Anthony Benadie, who has been running a restaurant in Middelburg since retiring from politics last year, was the leader of the official opposition in the province for 11 years when he turned down the opportunity to represent the party in parliament.

He cited family reasons but late last year he threw his name in the hat and applied for positions in eMalahleni and the Gert Sibande district.

Benadie believes an alleged incident of racism at his restaurant is being politically driven by people of his own party.

On February 21, a former party employee Ms Elnah Sekwane, said customers in the restaurant used the k-word towards her.

Benadie spoke to Lowvelder as a businessman and member of the community. He said he was not present as he was at home enjoying a day off.

“My manager on duty did not see or witness the alleged incident.

“There is no evidence to prove the incident took place or did not take place. As the owner of the restaurant I condemn racism in all its forms. As citizens we must and I do condemn all forms of racism.”

He added that as a citizen he strove to make a positive contribution.

“I ensure that my behaviour contributes to the creation of sufficient space for all people to live the lives they want to.

“If the allegations are proven to be true, it will be a civil matter between the complainant and those she is accusing. It has nothing to do with me, my shop, my staff or my management.”

In the meantime Benadie is consulting with his legal team about possible legal action against Sekwane.
