Man needs financial aid after serious accident

Palermo said that doctors were reluctant to give a prognosis at this stage, explaining that patients with similar injuries recover while others do not.

MBOMBELA – A young man (21) who was discovered on June 1 after he had been involved in an accident in Uitkyk during which he was critically injured the night before, is recuperating in a local clinic.

Lowvelder reported on Mr Steven Henry Gobey, who went missing on May 31. A photo of him was circulated on Nelspruit Concerned Citizens’ Facebook page. The following morning, the employee of a resident of Uitkyk discovered the wreckage of an Audi behind a pigsty. Gobey was found about 20 metres from the wreckage. Having been seriously injured, he was taken to Rob Ferreira Hospital where he spent six days in ICU.

He sustained a serious head injury and punctured lung. He was discharged from Rob Ferreira 10 days ago and is currently being treated in M-Care.

Ms Kerry Palermo, a family friend, says it is difficult to say whether Gobey is aware of his surroundings. “He opens his eyes and can move,” she added. Palermo said that doctors were reluctant to give a prognosis at this stage, explaining that patients with similar injuries recover while others do not.
The family does not have a medical aid and although doctors and therapists are treating him free of charge, the stay in M-Care amounts to about R2 000 per day.

Gobey is also on a course of antibiotics after having contracted infections in Rob Ferreira, which is also very costly. Palermo has consequently organised a fund-raising initiative to assist the family with medical expenses. Those who would like to help can buy a raffle ticket of
R100 to stand in line for three amazing prizes.

The first prize is a flight for two over Mbombela. The winners will be chauffeured to the venue in a Porsche Panamera and will enjoy a champagne picnic breakfast on the runway.

The second prize is five days’ self-catering accommodation for two in Inhambane, Mozambique, transport included.

The third is a R1 000 voucher at Kombu Sushi and Oyster Bar. The draw will take place on July 30 and winners will be contacted telephonically.
