EFF provincial leader in court after illegal protest

Twelve members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), including the Mpumalanga leader, were arrested yesterday during protest action at Umbhaba Estates and appeared in the Tonga Magistrate's Court this morning.

TENBOSCH – EFF Mpumalanga leader Collen Sedibe and eleven other EFF members were released on bail this afternoon after their court appearance this morning.

According to Const. Natacia Mbuyane of the Komatipoort SAPS, the EFF members were granted free bail and have to appear in court again on September 2.

The EFF embarked on protest action against Umbhaba Estates yesterday on behalf of a group of workers that were dismissed a few months ago. This was the latest in several protest marches and violent actions geared to force Umbhaba to reinstate the workers.

Police had to disperse the crowd with teargas and rubber bullets. A woman was reportedly injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

Mbuyane stated that the twelve people were arrested because they took part in illegal protest action. “The members applied for permission for the protest action but it was not granted. They still went ahead with it and we had to step in after several threats were made against the people from Umbhaba.”
