People warned against scammers

A concerned community member and parent has alerted the newspaper about a young boy and girl who are going around pretending to be Laerskool Nelspruit pupils.

The pair asks for donations which they claim are for a hockey tour at the school. According to the informant who chose not to be named, the pair approached her in the office block where she works to ask for donations.

“One was wearing the school’s track-pants and they had donations forms with them,” she said.

However when she checked the donations form she realised that, although it looked real and carried the school’s emblem, it didn’t have its contact numbers. “What troubled me was that people were falling for their tricks, Some were giving them as much as R500 because they thought it was a genuine plea for assistance,”she said.

She then called the school out of concern and they confirmed her suspicions.

“The school told me they did not send any pupils out to ask for donations.”she said.

The school’s principal, Mr Arrie Henn, said community members must be careful when approached by people who asks for donations for the school. “The community should refrain from giving money to people who claim they had been sent by the school. We no longer send people to ask for donations, so call us if you are approached by such people,” he said.

She was worried that the actions of the two would jeopardise the chance of other kids to receive assistance when needed. “People must be very careful regarding who they give their money to, imagine how many people those kids have tricked. There are a lot of greedy people out there who want to make money from other people’s good intentions,” she added.
