WHITE RIVER – A man was arrested in front of White River’s Pick and Pay after he allegedly assaulted a woman and a number of security officials. The incident happened at noon and the man was reportedly armed.
“He had a handgun in his possession,” said the police’s Capt Pieter Smit, who ordered members of Mbombela’s SAPS flying squad to the scene.
An eyewitness, Mr Solomon Zulu, said that a fight had broken out after the man allegedly assaulted the woman. Community members and security company officials struggled to restrain the man, who, according to eyewitness Ms Lizelle Versveld, allegedly assaulted security guards as well.
Hi-Tech Security’s Mr Ian de Paiva confirmed that one of Hi-Tech’s employees had been bitten during the incident.*
By 13:30, calm had been restored and customers could continue with their weekend shopping.
Pick and Pay’s Ms Precious Mgwenya did not see the assault take place from inside the store, but reported that she briefly hear “a noise and that people were fighting.”
