MBOMBELA – The South African Police Service’s diving unit is searching for Mr Nick Wiesmann, who disappeared on Saturday, in the Crocodile River.
Wiesmann was las last seen attending a wedding in the Lowveld Botanical Gardens.
His wife, Ms Bettina Wiesmann, was the last person who had seen him on 18:55.
According to Bettina, he walked from the wedding reception area to fetch a jacket and never returned.
A search party started looking for Wiesmann shortly after his disappearance.
In previous days, they had searched the gardens thoroughly employing tracking dogs and performing a line search. Aerial surveillance of the gardens had been conducted on Sunday and earlier today. The botanical gardens’ ponds have been searched and a search of the Crocodile River is underway.
Bossie’s Community Justice’s (BCJ) Mr Albert Gryvenstein explained that the search team had been met with numerous challenges. “Aerial searches were complicated by the dense vegetation of the Lowveld Botanical Gardens. The river that divers are currently searching is home to hippopotamuses and we spotted a crocodile there,” he said. Baboon tracks were spotted on the terrain and a source close to the investigation confirmed that a leopard had previously been seen in the area.
