Vehicle hits concrete on R40, driver dies

A map reveals how the accident happened.

MBOMBELA – The driver of a Toyota Fortuner that seemingly lost control of his vehicle died in an accident on the R40 this afternoon.

The driver was travelling from Mbombela in the direction of White River. With reference to the image below, skid marks on the scene revealed that he had:

(A) veered from the R40 in the direction of White River before (B) driving over the concrete slab separating the lanes of the R40. The vehicle continued across the concrete island and drove into three lanes of oncoming traffic.

No other vehicle was hit before the Fortuner headed towards a second concrete structure (C) separating the R40 from Bosch Road.

The vehicle plummeted into and over a fence and overturned. (D)

According to rescue workers on the scene, the man seemed to have died on impact. “We cannot say for sure, but he may have broken his neck,” one paramedic said.

His two passengers, who did not want to address the paper, managed to escape the wreck uninjured.

Police are investigating the incident.
