Two rescued from truck that veered into a mountain slope

They were trapped for more than four hours.

LYDENBURG – Two men were trapped in a truck that veered on the Long Tom Pass into a mountain slope on Friday, October 14. The slope is 40 metres deep.

The two were trapped for more than four hours while the emergency personnel were busy trying to free them from the truck cabin.

The emergency personnel were alerted by tourists who saw the accident happen.

According to a witness at the scene the couple did not only inform the emergency teams. “They went down to see if the people were fine before they left.”

According to Danny Theron, from Off Road Rescue Unit (Orru) and Bossies Community Justice (BCJ), the accident occurred around 13:00 in the afternoon. “We received a phone call informing us about two injured people trapped in a truck. We immediately rushed to the scene and we started working.”

The two men were transported to Lydenburg Hospital. One sustained chest injuries and the other a fractured leg.

The truck was the truck will retrieved tomorrow morning. According to Deon Broekman, a hazmat operator from Rapid Response, the road between Lydenburg and Sabie will be closed on Saturday, October 15 from 8:00 to 12:00. We will be recovering the truck.”
