Multiple accidents on wet Mbombela roads – please drive carefully

Please drive carefully on slippery, wet roads.

Motorists are urged to drive with caution as persistent rain and slippery roads have already caused multiple accidents in and around Mbombela this morning (Monday).

At 07:45, Emer-G-Med’s Martin Jeffrey said his company and ER24 had already responded to six accidents. This as he was leaving an accident scene in Schoemanskloof to respond to another at White River Crossing.

“The main roads are a problem. Dr Enos Mabuza Drive and Ferreira streets are like snot. Rather slow down and arrive at your destination five minutes late but in one piece,” he said.

Motorists are encourage to adhere to these six safety precautions when driving in wet weather:

1. Reduce speed and leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front of you.
2. Turn on your headlights to increase your visibility to other drivers.
3. Avoid sudden manoeuvres. Prevent skidding on slippery roads by making gentle turns and gradual stops.
4. Stay focused, keep your eyes on the road and avoid distractions such as cellphones and loud music.
5. Potholes may be hidden in large puddles of water. Look ahead and try to avoid pools of water where possible.
6. Beware of aquaplaning or hydroplaning. When driving on wet roads, a wedge of water can build up between the tire and the road surface, causing the tire to lose contact with the road and the vehicle to lose its ability to be steered.
