Driver killed in head-on collision between two trucks on the N4

The truck driver was trapped in the cabin and declared dead after being extracted.

An articulated truck driver died when two trucks collided head-on on the N4 toll road this morning (Sunday, June 8).

According to Emer-G-Med Nelspruit, the two heavy motor vehicles collided at the notorious Crocodile Valley, otherwise known as the Gorge, near the Matsulu turn-off at around 06:15.

“On arrival, we found that the two trucks – one carrying coal and the other beer – had collided partially head-on,” Emer-G-Med Nelspruit reported.

“The driver of one truck was severely trapped. Once access was gained and he could be extracted, the driver was declared deceased,” the statement continued.

The other driver escaped without any serious injuries and was able to walk around the scene.

The road was closed for several hours while the SAPS and forensic services attended the scene.

“We continue to ask drivers to comply with the rules of the road in order to reduce crashes,” said Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison.

He said investigations into the cause of the accident were under way.

“Motorists using the N4 towards the accident scene should expect delays, as the road had to be closed,” Mmusi added.
He said the department extended its condolences to the deceased’s family, colleagues and friends.
