Some passers-by discovered the man on July 4, and immediately alerted the police and paramedics.
Upon their arrival, the paramedics declared the man dead. However, the pathology department reportedly refused to remove the body from the scene.
Their rationale – communicated to the police and bystanders – was that they only handled cases of homicide, concluding, in this instance that, due to a lack of visible trauma, the man died of natural causes.

The Hazyview Mortuary ultimately assisted in removing the body from the street and is holding it while efforts are made to identify the deceased and locate his family. At the time of discovery, the man was reportedly wearing dirty clothes, leading to speculation that he may have been living on the street.
