A man who shot and killed his girlfriend in Shatale on Thursday, July 3, was found dead with a bullet wound to his head three days later.

According to the Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the police in Bushbuckridge received information around 13:30 that a woman had been shot in Shatale.

“It is alleged that the victim, Sasiki Mgwambe (45), was driving to her residence in Shatale when she was followed by her male friend who was driving a white Toyota Hilux double-cab bakkie. When she reached her home and was about to enter the yard, the armed man allegedly arrived, shot her, then carried her into his vehicle and left the scene,” said Ndubane.

Based on information received, police tracked the suspect’s vehicle to his residence in Shangaan Hill in Bushbuckridge.

“The vehicle was found inside the garage and the body of the victim was discovered on the back seat. All role players were summoned to the scene, and paramedics declared her dead,” said Ndubane.

The suspect was not at the scene and a search for him commenced immediately.

On Sunday, July 6, the suspect’s family informed the police that he had committed suicide at his home.

When our members arrived at the suspect’s residence at about 10:00, they found him with a bullet wound to the head. A firearm was found next to his body and paramedics declared him dead at the scene,” said Ndubane.

 

The deceased was identified as 47-year-old Godfrey Lubisi.

Ndubane confirmed that police investigations were under way and that a case of murder and an inquest had been registered.

The acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, strongly condemned the violence perpetrated against women and vulnerable groups.

He urged community members to seek professional help when dealing with personal or relationship difficulties, rather than resorting to violence.
