LYDENBURG – The Lydenburg men’s hockey team that competed in the first league of the Mpumalanga Hockey Association competition recently beat their opponents, LVCC, by 4-0 in Nelspruit.

Petrus Malaka scored three goals and Donald Masuku one. The men from Lydenburg started with hockey development at Marambane Primary and is using the Marambanes field for practice.

Zizwe General Trade leveled the pitch and also sponsored the teams travelling costs to Nelspruit during the season. The chairman of the team, Abram Mkabela, thanked Kobie Pruis of Zizwe for their ongoing support for the team. Members of the team also did their part in the community when they volunteered to paint and assist with the improvements and renovation of Enicca Makhge’s RDP house after her operation.

One of the players, Andies Selala, represented Mpumalanga in the provincial country districts tournament held in Pietermaritzburg, but unfortunately the provincial team lost in the semifinals. According to the team they are looking forward to next season and are planning hockey development at local high schools in Mashishing.

Although they are giving their time to train the pupils, they will still need the assistance of the community for hockey sticks. Mkabela invites people to donate their old hockey sticks. It can be delivered to the Steelburger/Lydenburg News office.
