MALALANE – Roads in Nkomazi’s surrounding towns are in poor condition and residents want to know why.
Komatipoort’s main road has no space for traders and pedestrians to travel safely, there are potholes and no lines are visible. According to residents there are no traffic law enforcers to control movement in this street and this leads to chaos.
Roads in Malalane, Naas, Tonga, KaMhlushwa and Driekoppies are also not up to standard, according to a resident in Malalane.
The Hectorspruit/Tonga Road has become a concern for motorists who use it every day, as accidents are frequently caused by potholes.
“Safe driving has been stressed by the SAPS and TRAC services but municipal roads are a death trap,” said a resident of Komatipoort, Theuns Botha.
The people of Nkomazi feel that the upkeep of the town’s infrastructure is the municipality’s responsibility and should be taken seriously.
Municipal spokesman Cyril Ripinga says, “The road from Hectorspruit to Tonga is a provincial government road and not the municipality’s responsibility, as well as the Naas/Komatipoort main road.”
The spokesman for public works, roads and transport, was not available for comment.
