Summer Sports Awards Dinner 2013

Although all the sports compete in a team environment, the common element defining the five codes are the amount of individual dedication, effort and skill required to perform at the highest level.

A wonderful evening was held to pay tribute to the achievements of a number our of sporting codes over the past year. This has, without a doubt, been the greatest season in Uplands history in all the disciplines, with new heights being reached in almost every area. The number of provincial and regional selections across the board bear testimony to the impressive groundbreaking feats.

Although all the sports compete in a team environment, the common element defining the five codes are the amount of individual dedication, effort and skill required to perform at the highest level. It takes hours of practise and preparation for success and the players, riders and swimmers were recognised for their efforts.

Mountain biking

Gustav van Veyeren was awarded the trophy for sportsmanship and endeavour, and Tyneale Terry for most-improved mountain biker. Currently ranked fourth in the country in his age group and showing relentless form throughout the year, Waldi Kuhn was justly rewarded as rider of the year. Natasha Emmerick’s remarkable achievements earned her the trophy for female rider of the year. Colours were awarded to Tyneale Terry and Ryan Clarke and honours to Waldi Kuhn.

Equestrian

Skye Comley received the trophy for sportsmanship and endeavour. The most-improved rider of the year was Callahan Buchanan. Natasha Emmerick’s all-round ability proved her to be the an automatic choice for rider of the year. Honours were awarded to Natasha Emmerick, Jeanne Gildenhuys and Bianca Jones.

Tennis

Stefanie Vieler and Niksha Mothilal found the balance and continued to persevere and succeed on the courts as well as in the classroom. They were joint winners of the sportsmanship and endeavour trophy. Pim Dhaen was the most improved player while Bradley Kirk rightfully claimed the prize for best male tennis player and Misty Thomson was the female counterpart. Colours were awarded to Bradley Kirk and Atanas Parparav.

Swimming

Kirsten Braun received the rophy for sportsmanship and endeavour and Gustav van Veyeren for most improved swimmer this year. Shannay Allmark and Hannes Hamer walked away with the best female and male swimmer trophies. Colours for swimming were awarded to Josh Ward, Oliver Koen, Luke Ryle, Sean Cronje, Zsa Zsa de Leo and Holly Maclennan and honours were awarded to Grant Nisbet Hannes Hamer and Shannay Allmark.

Cricket

Matthew Carlse and Jason Bruce-Brand shared the trophy for sportsmanship and endeavour, Josh Rogers received the trophy for most-improved player of the year. It was without doubt a season which will never be forgotten at Uplands College for Dean Carlisle. A massive six centuries were recorded by Dean this year, four of which came on the UK trip and one, significantly, against Hilton College’s first team. Dean has scored more than 1 200 runs in the calendar year, which is something that professional cricketers dream about and the trophy for cricketer of the year was a foregone conclusion. Colours for cricket were awarded to Jason Bruce-Brand and honours were awarded to Dean Carlisle, Matthew Nepgen, Cameron Jacobsz, Garreth Park and Justin Pyne-James.
