TONGA – On Thursday police patrolling Block C noticed people drinking at a shebeen.
They entered the establishment and found that the owner was contravening section 152 (1) (a) of the Mpumalanga Liquor Act (Act 5 of 2006) by selling illegal liquor.
The owner was fined R1 500 and the liquor was confiscated. Cluster commander of Tonga police, Brig Lizzy Mtungwa warned the community in light of the approaching festive season not to open shebeens but to follow the necessary process in keeping with the liquor act to get a licence to own a liquor outlet.
She also warned owners of taverns not to sell liquor to persons under 18 or to employ children under the age of 18, as they would be charged. Mtungwa called on the community to report any shebeens operating in their area so that illegal selling of liquor could be stopped.
