MALALANE – On Wednesday the suspects accused of robbing a local cash-loans business in Station Street in July appeared in court. Their case was again postponed to March 18 for further investigation.
One of the accused Mr Sifiso Nklema (26) was not present in court. The state prosecutor, however, assured the magistrate that they have communicated with the suspect and that the remanded date was discussed with him. Mzamani Baloyi (40) and Nomsa Qotwane (51) were however present in court.
On Friday July 11 the three suspected robbers allegedly targeted a local establishment, Sizakalani Cash Loans in Station Street and held the employees at gunpoint.
The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money in an orange Volkswagen Polo, which was identified by waitresses of a restaurant next door. Police, along with the cooperation of Malalane Against Crime (MAC) and the community, pursued the suspects on the N4. An eyewitness in Hectorspruit spotted the vehicle speeding towards Komatipoort and immediately alerted authorities. The robbers were cornered by local farmers and apprehended by the SAPS.
“Farmers found the Polo on the Strydomblock Road with flat tyres, but the suspects were nowhere to be seen,” said Const Bheki Nkosi, spokesman for the local SAPS.
Another vehicle, a Renault Sandero, was then stopped on a farm in Komatipoort. Its occupants allegedly ran into an orchard. Two of them were apprehended. “On Monday July 14, the third suspect, allegedly an employee of the business, was also arrested and appeared in court with the other two,” said Nkosi.
