Three members of the panga gang suspected of being involved in a series of robberies around Emjindini will know whether they have been granted bail on February 19.
Velaphi “Mjongeni” Maseko (27), Malibongwe Muraji (23), and Sifiso Phillip Thabethe (20) appeared in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court last Monday for formal bail application. They were previously denied bail. The trio was arrested at about 02:00 on December 30. At the time of their arrest, they were found in possession of two pangas and an axe. It is alleged that they were using the dangerous weapons to attack and rob people.
Several people in Emjindini have in the past year been robbed of valuable items by a gang allegedly wielding pangas and axes.
Recently, the local court left community members fuming when it released five members, who were found in possession of pangas, butcher knives and axes.
The five members admitted that the dangerous weapons belonged to them but insisted that they did not use it to attack people. They said they were armed to take revenge on Mjongeni’s gang which had once attacked them.
The trio’s case will be heard in the local court.
