Lowvelders celebrate with the French

French rolls, fresh bread, delicious cheese platters and a wide variety of top wines welcomed guests as they walked down the stairs.

Bastille Day, as French National Day is referred to in English-speaking countries, is celebrated on July 14 each year. On Saturday afternoon Lowvelders celebrated with the French at the Court Yard Cafe at the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre.

This was a first for the Lowveld, and definitely not the last. French rolls, fresh bread, delicious cheese platters and a wide variety of top wines welcomed guests as they walked down the stairs. A local band which played French music set the mood just right and red, blue and white decor was the cherry on the cake, or rather the fig on the blue cheese. One surely didn’t need to be in France to celebrate Bastille Day, which is formally called La Fête Nationale.

This day commemorates the beginning of the French revolution with the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, as well as the Fête de la Fédération which celebrated the unity of the people on July 14, 1790. Celebrations are held throughout France.
Although this piece of history is not well known to all, it didn’t deter food and wine lovers from having a great time in celebration of the French. This could very well become an annual event.
