First princess joins forces to help with disabled children
The school also gives these children a meal every day and in most cases this would be their only meal for the day.
Ms Mpumalanga 2016’s first princess has joined forces with the Timeless Group and the AGS Cummunio Church to help needy learners.
Salome de Wet is working with Jacques Lombard and Leanie Erasmus on a project where members of the community can pay the annual school fee of R550 for a disabled child on the waiting list of about 120 at KaMagugu Inclusive School.
It is one of 30 resource schools in South Africa enrolling multiracial learners with mild to moderate learning barriers, as well as learners in high need of support.
It currently has 334 learners, mostly with multiple disabilities, and 47 staff members. The school also gives these children a meal every day and in most cases this would be their only meal for the day.
She said that children were close to her heart, especially those with special needs who were often overlooked.
“Fortunately for me this became part of my life when Lombard, director of the Timeless Group allocated this project as part of the Ms Mpumalanga Charities,” added De Wet.
She said education was a vital need in any child’s life and any disability could be overcome through it. “Unfortunately the costs for the medical needs of a disabled child are high and usually there are not funds available for education,” De Wet concluded.
