“This is why I sing,” says Jason du Plessis
His feet are planted firmly on Lowveld soil, but his talent and vision will take him to the stars.
MBOMBELA – Jason du Plessis is not driven by a desire for fame or riches. Although he has loads of guts and motivation, it is not even these attributes that propel him towards his goals. “The smiles on people’s faces when they hear my music. That is what makes me do it,” he said after his successful performance at Stoep on Saturday.
Jason wanted to pursue a career in music so badly that he interrupted his studies in actuarial sciences to follow this lifelong dream. When he was younger, he made a name for himself at a national competitive level as an Irish dancing champion. He continued to develop his talents in the arts and discovered that he loved singing. The 20-year-old’s singing career kicked off on Stoep’s open-mic stage in 2015.
“In the past year I have dedicated myself to developing my singing career,” he said. His vocal coach, André Martinez, also trained Bobby van Jaarsveld. André is known for helping singers with singing techniques, song selections and performance perfection. “He worked with my naturally low vocal register and we practised perfecting higher notes,” said Jason.
Producer Byron Keno was called in to offer his expertise on Jason’s single, “Net soos jy kan,” which seems sure to become a hit.
“I’m proud to say my single was aired for the first time on our region’s own Radio Laeveld 100.5 FM on December 31,” he said. Although he is very proud of his Afrikaans heritage, Jason wants his music to reach everyone – regardless of their mother tongue – and get them on their feet and dancing. His career has taken flight all over South Africa and he has scheduled performances in Hatfield, Rustenburg and Krugersdorp in the next month.
Keep an eye on this local man. His feet are planted firmly on Lowveld soil, but his talent and vision will take him to the stars.
