Award honours resilient women who work tirelessly in rural areas

The Good Work Foundation (GWF)’s Hazyview Digital Learning Campus (HDLC) has recently been named the winner of the Empowerment of Women in the community awards category at the annual 2016 Gender Mainstreaming Awards sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

“This is South Africa’s premier event in gender diversity, and to accept this accolade on behalf of the incredibly innovative and resilient women that we work with in rural Mpumalanga, is a tremendous honour,” GWF’s Mr Ryan James said.

Women make up 86 per cent of all HDLC non-paying students. In addition, 70 per cent of the team and 80 per cent of the business consultants are women. Its ICT literacy programme at the Hazyview, Justicia and Philippolis campuses is presented by all-female teams. What’s more, women make up 60 per cent of the head of departments at HDLC.

Lastly, over the past 18 months their media team, led by a woman, has published more than 30 stories celebrating women on their blog.

By far one of the favourite stories featuring a woman in the past year is the recent video about HDLC receptionist, Ms Deliwe Tibane, who was featured in the Absa Prosper film series.

The team would like to thank the organisations, businesses, partners, men, and especially women (from all over the world), who make it possible for them to have such an impact on this beautiful country. “We are proud to accept this award in collaboration with our long-time partners and team at T-Systems South Africa, who also won three awards at the event.

“We would also like to convey our congratulations to our partners at Barclays Africa who were the overall category winners in the Investing in Young Women category,” James concluded.
