WARNING: Avoid agricultural college road due to ongoing protest at UMP

Protests got violent early as students barricaded the road and threw stones and bottles at the Police who opened fire with rubber bullets and stun grenades.

 

MBOMBELA – Police fired stun grenades and rubber bullets at protesting students of the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) this morning.

 

Police said violence erupted around 05:00 this morning at the Mbombela campus when students burned tyres and blockaded the road with logs and garbage bins.

Police closed the entrance to the university.  Employees working at a construction site inside the university grounds were evacuated to avoid victimisation by the protesting students. There is a heavy police presence at the scene.

MBOMBELA – The students from the University of Mpumalanga at the Mbombela campus joined the national #FeesMustFall campaign on Monday.

The students demonstrated outside the university’s premises by burning tyres, calling the management to consider stopping the fee increment for the 2017 academic year.

Police were called to the scene when violence erupted after
the students started blocking the road outside the university gate.
