Football tournament launched in honour of late Bafana Bafana icon

In remembering one of the fallen football icons in the country, the Pulana Maroga Trust organised a soccer tournament named after the former Bafana Bafana assistant coach, Thomas “Chincha” Madigage.
The tourney commenced on July 22 with 16 teams from the Driekop area competing for the silver ware. The finals of the tournament will be held on August 6 at Mooihoek’s Real Touch sports grounds in Driekop.
Madigage died in October 2012 when his car crashed into two donkeys and then ploughed into an oncoming vehicle’s trailer on the R37. The organisers of the tourney indicated that they wanted local youths to emulate Madigage’s soccer career.Madigage started playing soccer at the tender age of 16 when National First Division (NFD) side Jomo Cosmos signed him in 1987. As a talented midfielder, he went on to enjoy a short stint at FC Zurich in Switzerland (in the process of becoming Bafana Bafana’s first overseas player) before a knee injury forced him to return to Cosmos.
He later joined SuperSport United and was appointed as the club’s assistant coach in 2002 following his retirement from professional soccer.
