Police investigate deaths of former councillor, car crash victims

A former municipal councillor was allegedly kidnapped and killed and five people died in a car crash this week.

KAMHLUSHWA – A former Nkomazi Local Municipality (NLM) councillor, Mr Victor Mashabane, was found fatally shot in his vehicle on Tuesday night.

The 55-year-old was an NLM councillor from 2000 to 2005.

According to provincial SAPS spokesman Brig Leonard Hlathi, Mashabane was allegedly kidnapped at the gate of his house in kaMhlushwa.

Information police received indicated that an unknown number of men forced him into his vehicle and they drove off. He was later found dead, in the same vehicle, with a gunshot wound.

Police are investigating the incident and anyone with information on the kidnapping and murder is urged to contact Det Cpt Pat Banda on 082-449-0291.

Six people have also been killed on the roads over the past two days.

Yesterday around 23:30, the driver of a bakkie lost control of the vehicle on the N4 between the Marloth Park and Tenbosch turn-off.

It collided head-on with a truck and five people, including a baby, died. One person was seriously injured and transported to Tonga Hospital.
