Updated: Robber vanishes with R2 000

He tied up both of the employees with cable ties.

The Sheet Street store in the White River Square shopping centre was hit by an armed robbery on Sunday July 1.

According to Sgt Cynthia Mbokodo, SAPS White River spokesman, it happened around 13:00.

The staff members were preparing to close the shop when an armed man entered. He went to the cash desk, pointed a firearm and ordered the cashier, who was busy cashing up, to give him the money.

He forced her to the cash office where he further demanded the safe keys, instructed them to open it and put the money in his backpack.

He tied up both of the employees with cable ties.

According to the area manager of Sheet Street, Marie Klopper, the staff members then managed to lock themselves in the toilet and call for help.

Members of Hi-Tech Security and the SAPS arrived at the scene shortly, but the perpetrator was nowhere to be found. They even searched for him on the roof of the centre, but apparently he had left through the front door before their arrival.

Klopper said it was a quiet day with few customers. According to the charges laid with the police, an amount of approximately R2 000 was taken.

“Fortunately none of the staff were hurt, and we immediately sent them for preliminary trauma counselling,” she said.

Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrator should contact the investigation officer, WO Hendrik Grobler, on 082-455-6591.
