Hazyview’s first marathon is a resounding success

The first marathon hosted by Hazyview Athletics Club was held recently.

The first marathon hosted by Hazyview Athletics Club was held on Saturday October 20. Although the club was faced with troublesome obstacles and many teething problems, the runners received a warm welcome when they arrived at the Sanbonani Resort Hotel & Spa.

Staff and spectators welcomed the 42,2-kilometre winner, Ntutuko Maseko from the Nedbank Club in Mbombela. He won the race in a blistering time of 2:09,03.

Second place went to Lovers Hlatshwayo in a time of 2:13,17 and a deserving third place went to Happy Ubisi.

Sandra Mahoul from Kruger Park Marathon Club won the ladies’ 42,2 kilometres in gracious style.

In the 21,1 kilometres, Abidnico Mashaba had too much horsepower for Ronnie Matstoto and Mpho Neishitangani and racked up a win in a spectacular time of 1:15,14.

The women held their own with Wanika du Plessis and Elmarie Braucher coming in second and third place respectively to a strong run by Martha Minaar.

Griffits Mohlahla was the first 10-kilometre runner into Sanbonani Resort, finishing the race in 28:57.

Albert Makhubela was second with a time of 29:04. In a respectable time of 29:58, Sello Maqoma ran across the finishing line, with Helle Phangani coming in in a well-deserved first place for the ladies’ 10-kilometre race.

Welcome rain did not put a damper on the day’s events and the club expressed its appreciation and thanks to all the sponsors – Numbi Ford for the medals, Pause Spa, Sanbonani staff, PRU Medical Assistance and Mhangela Restaurant – as well as the residents and visitors of Hazyview who were very patient on the day.
