Women come from far and wide to knit blankets for the less privileged

Many of these blankets have now found their way to cyclone-stricken Mozambique.

A group of women from Masoyi gather at St George’s Church near White River every week for a service and to use the opportunity to knit blankets for the 67 Blankets for Mandela Day project.

Last Saturday they were also present at an exhibition of hundreds of these blankets, organised by Penny Boden, to showcase their act of love to the community.

Many of the “knitwits” were at the Barnyard at Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre to share patterns, while others just enjoyed the fellowship – as they do every month when they gather at a coffee shop.

Although it started with a request for a few blankets years ago, women in the Lowveld are knitting and crocheting hundreds of blankets every month.

Many of these blankets have now found their way to cyclone-stricken Mozambique, while others had been distributed to local homes and charities. Between events, they stockpile, says Penny.

Women who would like to join in the project but cannot meet every month, can either donate wool or knit blankets, or even squares, on their own and send it to Penny.
