More burglaries than accidents over the Easter weekend

The Easter weekend has come and gone, and with it, a spike in burglaries in Mbombela, according to Callum McPherson from Hi-Tech security.

“We have received a number of complaints about houses being broken into over the weekend.”

The Easter weekend saw a spate of burglaries in Nelspruit.

An alarming new trend has been identified. Burglars carry sticks with hooks to remove valuables from homes through windows that have been left open. Additionally, homes without alarm systems were prime targets for burglars on the prowl.

“People need to keep their windows closed, especially if they are away most of the day. A number of residents have also reported burglars who target homes without alarm systems.”

The weekend was relatively quiet with minor accidents reported on Nelspruit roads.

He added that, once a home has been identified as being unprotected, it creates the ideal situation for a burglar to enter the property, grab any valuables they can find, and flee the scene. There is nothing worse than returning home from a holiday to discover that your home has been ransacked by burglars.

McPherson emphasised the need to take adequate measures, such as engaging the services of a security company and leaving your property secure before setting off on holiday. In a welcome deviation from the norm, Mbombela’s roads were much safer and no fatal crashes were reported, according to Emer-G-Med operations manager, Martin Jeffrey. He ascribed this to the high visibility of law enforcement agencies on our roads during this period.

Burglars prey on unprotected homes.

“The police and traffic officials maintained high visibility on our roads. There were a number of roadblocks as well, which served as an effective deterrent to errant drivers,” Jeffrey said.

Aside from a few minor incidents, notably an accident on the R37 on Friday and another accident which involved residents returning home from holiday, there were no fatalities on the roads.

“There was nothing major to report and it was generally a very quiet period for Mbombela and the surrounding areas,” he said.
