Music in the spirit of Ubuntu
The Spirit of Ubuntu Festival is held annually at the Nourish Eco Village.
California native Leah Kirrane will release her debut album, Because I’m Free, at the Spirit of Ubuntu Festival on September 21.
Leah said Because I’m Free is a collection of easy-going, thought-provoking, soul-infused folk songs with a bluesy, jazzy feel. Written, composed and performed by Leah, the music is deep but light, sober yet fun, and embraces the message of ubuntu.
“The Spirit of Ubuntu Festival is held annually at the Nourish Eco Village and is all about ubuntu. It brings together people from all walks of life to a shared space, to discover the Nourish holistic development model, see the craft centre with recycled art as well as traditional crafts and new coffee shop. Here they can see how we aim for empowerment in communities, with conservation outcomes in mind and a sustainability plan to make it all happen.”
Nourish is a non-profit organisation focused on growing resilient communities. “We believe in fighting poaching through fighting poverty, and thus all our projects are integrated, holistic and sustainable to grow a better tomorrow,” Kirrane said.
Because I’m Free was recorded by Peter Salzwedel of Echo Studios in Mbombela.
Though normally just a girl and her guitar, the album includes the accompaniment of Ilse Maré on keyboard/piano, Wynand Maré on drums, Sunny Principe on bass, Jaime Negrão on lead guitar and Neil Fishwick on harmonica.
Kirrane is also a children’s book author, and will also be selling her recent release, On Point Polly at the festival. Fifty per cent of CD sales will go to Nourish Eco-Village.
Kirrane lives in Graskop with her husband Cameron and their two children.
