Nomads host Bungalows for animal welfare
Nomads members donated pet food and money to buy medical stock as needed.
Lowveld Nomads Bowls joined their rivals at Bungalows Bowling Club for two games of 12 ends on September 15.
The day’s charity to benefit was the Hazyview animal clinic welfare fund. The fund was created six years ago by Dr Jana Prinsloo and Lynda Bartholomew. They recognised a need for a fund to assist owners when their pets fell ill or became involved in an accident and the cost would far exceed their income.
Nomads members donated pet food, that they will use where necessary, and R3 000 will also be donated from Nomads to buy medical stock as needed.
Prinsloo also brought a puppy called Gracie along to show players how she had improved from having bad mace. Despite the fact that they also had to remove her one eye, she was playful and running around, proving the success of the project.
After the presentation Nomads drew a raffle that was won by Jerry Gertzen. A spider was played and won by Andy McQueen and Bronwen Meredith.
Owen and Bronwen Meredith and Darryl Cross were the overall winners. The first session prize went to Christie Cross, Johnny Desmore and Ann Coetzee and the second session prize to Jerry Gertzen and Rodger Wansbury.
The animal clinic welfare relies on cash donations and fundraisers to keep it going and the welfare profile is available for all to peruse to see where the funds are being used. The fund is grateful for any donations including pet food. Medical stock is their biggest expense. Often the medicine can only be bought from medical retailers.
Their welfare funds also support wildlife rehabilitation cases such as birds of prey needing assistance, mongoose orphans, vervet monkey orphans, bush baby orphans, and more.
