Recycling project shut down after rubbish dumping

No recyclable waste will be accepted by the White River SPCA any longer and the project will no longer be run by the organisation.

The recycling project at the White River SPCA has closed down.

It was announced this week that, with immediate effect, no recyclable waste will be accepted and the project will no longer be run by the organisation.

“White River SPCA has become an unhygienic dumping site for the public to dump their waste,” explained Estelle de Villiers. “We apologise to all those that have supported us with this initiative in the proper way of disposing of glass, tin, paper and plastic, however it is no longer viable for us to continue.”

She said the organisation may consider continuing with this project in the future, but only when they can put better controls and a person in place to be on site all the time.

It would be ideal to find sponsors to pay the salary of such a person, as well as the necessary containers, but currently it is not viable for the organisation to incur these expenses, since their income derived from selling to a recycling plant does not even reach R1 000 per month.

Should anyone be able to help in this regard, please phone Estelle on 083-664-7505.
