Double the medal haul for Mpumalanga team

The team won 11 medals compared to five last year.

They went, they played and they improved their results at the National Indigenous Games Festival.

Team Mpumalanga claimed fifth position, one better than last year, due to preparations before the event at Noma Nini Lodge at White River.

Prior to the games, the team held a three-day training camp at White River to prepare. The final standings suggest the camp worked like magic.

“We are delighted by the performance of Team Mpumalanga. We want to thank the players for representing the province with aplomb on the national stage.

“We also extend gratitude to the technical team for getting players ready for the games,” said the spokesman of the Department of Sports, Culture and Recreation, Sibongile Nkosi.

Medals were won in the following sports: Phumzile Ndlovu (bronze in morabaraba), Piet Mahlangu (bronze in morabaraba), Banele Shabangu (silver in driestokkies), Hope Nxumalo (bronze in incuva), kho-kho males (silver), kho-kho boys (bronze), Baxolile Mtshweni (silver in intonga, junior females), Errol Ncabane (silver in intonga, junior males), Siphiwe Nkosi (silver in intonga, senior females), jukskei elite (silver) and jukskei girls (silver).

The team participated in all the codes; diketo (coordination game), dibeke (running game), kho-kho (running game), morabaraba (board game), incuva (board game), jukskei (target game), kgati (rope-jumping), intonga (stick fighting) and driestokkies.
