Corridor Gazette attended the meeting on request of the desperate Komati residents. Richard confirmed to all parties involved that this was not a load-shedding issue. According to him, they have been struggling with power outages for quite some time and it not only cost a fortune to keep generators running, but also caused a problem with productivity. The root of the ongoing problem is at the Komati Sonefe line.

Eskom’s Lucky Khumalo, sector and area manager of the Onderberg, explained that there were various factors that caused the spikes and cut the electricity supply. Conductors burning and melting, trees falling on the lines and sugar cane fires were some of the causes he named.

Khumalo committed to have a plan of action ready for Eskom to resolve this issue by the end of this week.
