Get through lockdown, get down with Pilates

Roos lives by the motto, “Movement for life.”

As the public practises social distancing, local Pilates instructor Stephani Roos has switched gears to recording her classes.

These videos are shared on a WhatsApp group for the members of Pilates Place. Roos lives by the motto, “Movement for life.” She said even in trying times, fitness is still a priority.

“My co-worker, Monica Sinclair, and I are sending different stints of exercises to our groups. “I think it is very important to contribute to a positive outlook. I do not have scheduled classes now, so I record my WhatsApp videos for Pilates when necessary.

We also send emails to individuals who have specific requests. I also home-school my two daughters, so our day is a little more relaxed on that front,” she said.

“The exercises are stretching programmes for the hips, back, shoulders and neck. There are also ab exercises, balance exercises and more. We have a broad spectrum of clients, so we try and accommodate as many as we can.

“For fun, we have started a plank challenge. Every few days we send clips with plank variations. The client who can string the most together when classes start again wins a prize.”
Roos said people like to be in control and these classes give them a sense of security.

“Practising Pilates brings that sense of control and continuation. Just breathing deeply alone brings a sense of calm. We have to help one other through this trying time,” she said.
Pilates Place started providing these classes to keep their members healthy even while they practise social distancing.
