A father to a seven-year-old girl, Nsizwa Nyundu, saidteaching his daughter, Zanobuhle Nyundu, grade one maths is the most interesting part of home schooling. She is a learner at Entheos Christian School.

He took an old calendar then made it useful by creating a table on the back page. “Numeracy, which is the ability to understand and work with numbers, is very important for every child. Even and odd numbers were also the order of the day. Teaching our kids still needs to continue even if we are in lockdown.”

According to Nyundu he is glad that she is now able to count from one to 100, and down from 100 to one.

“Lets all assist the school teachers with the progress of the kids during this lockdown,” he explained.

“The school created a WhatsApp groups for each grade. They have individual groups for homework, and revision during this time is shared.

There are also online resources that the school shared that the kids are using.”

Hanekom said, “As parents we also let them do summeries of the first quarter’s work and start to go through next quarter’ s work,” he said.

The Department of Education has also provided various platforms to help assist learners during lockdown.
