Old but certainly not cold

Lowveld Old Wheels Club (LOWC) had its annual chairperson's bash at Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre this past weekend.

And judging by the number of members who attended, there is still certainly plenty of vooma in both those the old wheels and legs.

Group members started their drive from PUMA Onthego in Mbombela and followed a route designed by Ken Grossmith taking them on a scenic route to Casterbridge via the Brondal Road. This included some challenges and pre-set speeds and distances on which the drivers were scored.

Shortly after their arrival at Casterbridge, the winners were announced, some spot prizes were presented (sponsored by Trevor PUMA Onthego and Mopani), and Adolf Leasecke was honoured for his long-term dedication and service to LOWC.

Tony Barbosa, one of the organisers of the 2020 KARCHER Classic Car Rally, was introduced. The original rally which always included Mozambique and Swaziland was cancelled due to COVID-19. He shared some information on this rally which will pass through

Mbombela and the Lowveld towards the end of September – 24 to 27 to be precise. Their HQ for this area will be at Ingwenyama Lodge and LOWC members have been invited to participate in day two of the rally which will start at the POMC in Pretoria on the 24th. There will also be an old roadhouse experience for competitors – in Mbombela.

With borders still closed, organisers had to divert and the Lowveld stage will include a stopover in Pilgrim’s Rest. “This to also stimulate tourism and market the historic little town of Pilgrim’s Rest,” said Tony.

Henry van Zyl, the current chairperson of LOWC, kept everything tidy and short because the challenging drive and the aroma from the kitchen had everyone drooling. The food was worth the wait though!
